Obituary for Elaine J. Hafner

Elaine J. Hafner, age 93 of Shawano, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, June 25, 2022, at Birch Hill Care Center in Shawano where she had been a resident the past three months.

Elaine was born in Bonduel on April 11, 1929, a daughter of the late Rudolph and Christine (Pederson) Gipp. She attended St. Paul Lutheran grade school in Bonduel. On June 28, 1947, she was united in marriage to Roger Hafner at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. The couple lived in Shawano where Elaine worked at “You Need a Lunch” café, the Box Factory, and the Shawano paper mill. When the couple began their family of seven children, Elaine stayed home to care for the children and their family’s home. Roger preceded her in death on August 13, 2001, after 54 years of marriage.

Elaine is a longtime member of St. James Lutheran Church where she served with the Ladies Aid Society. She loved to cook, and was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She never forgot a birthday and put the needs of others before her own. She loved to read and was a member of TOPS.

Survivors include her seven children, James (Deb) Hafner of Shawano, Dale (Tim Malueg) Hafner of Oostburg, Lee (Wendy) Hafner of Shawano, Tina (Jeff) Baker of Bonduel, Duane (Wendy) Hafner of Shawano, Tom Hafner of Shawano, and Holly (Randy) Schmidt of Hartford; fourteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Edna Gipp; and several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Elaine was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Christine Elaine Hafner and Jessica Hafner; two sisters, Lucille Clark, and Katherine Popp; and one brother, Rudy Gipp.

Funeral services for Elaine will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at 11:00 am at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. Pastor Mark Drengler will officiate. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. Visitation will begin at the church on Thursday at 9:00 am.

In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials are preferred to St. James Lutheran Church in Elaine’s name.
