Henry A. “Moose” Hawpetoss, "Mayawasic", age 78 of Keshena, passed away unexpectedly and began his journey to the spirit world on Saturday afternoon, July 9, 2022, in Shawano with his daughter by his side.
Moose was born in Neopit on May 11, 1944, a son of Mayakawsic and Catherine (Wychesit) Hawpetoss. He attended school in Antigo. Following school, Moose moved to Chicago and was employed as an iron worker, and also drove truck. He moved back to Keshena in 1975 and spent over 41 years at Menominee Tribal Enterprises as a log loader, retiring in 2018. Moose was an avid golfer, playing at Pine Hills Golf Course in Bowler with his golf family. He was also active with the Menominee Warrior Society. In his younger days, Moose played hockey and softball with the Sharkz. He loved being outdoors and spent a lot of time hunting, fishing, and providing for his family and community.
Survivors include his children, Toni (Chris) Caldwell of Keshena, CheeQuah Schanandore of Middle Village, and Menomin Hawpetoss of Keshena; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his sisters, Laura Brzezinski of Keshena, and Nell Lee Hawpetoss of Shawano. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Darion Larenz; four brothers, John T. Hawpetoss, Eugene “Gilly” Hawpetoss, Louis Hawpetoss, and Neil Hawpetoss; two sisters, Charlene “Muggs” Hawpetoss-Wheelock, and Mary “Totty” Hawpetoss.
Traditional services for Moose will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at 1:30 pm at Mickelson Funeral Service in Shawano. The Fire Nation Drummers will be present. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am and continue until the time of service.
