Obituary for James E. "Jim" Gueths

Dr. James (Jim) Everett Gueths, age 83 of Shawano, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 21, 2022.

Jim was born August 18,1939, in Shawano, Wisconsin, the son of the late Everett and Minnie (Kroenke) Gueths. He attended school in Shawano, graduating from Shawano High School with the Class of 1957 as the class president. Following graduation, he went on to have an extended, successful career in education. Jim married the love of his life, Shiela (Zehms), on August 26, 1961, the same year he graduated from Ripon College. Jim and Shiela moved to Connecticut where Jim attended the University of Connecticut. He received his Master of Science in 1963 and a PHD in Physics in 1966.

Jim and Shiela moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin where he was a professor of physics and later became the Assistant Vice Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. During his career at UW-Oshkosh, Jim's creativity and innovation helped to create the Koehn Institute. As his dear friend and colleague Al Hartman mentioned, " he watched Jim lead and be innovative". He moved the UW-Oshkosh from having a centralized copying function to dispersed copy areas across campus which made employee life much easier. Jim also formed an academic advisory committee. Seven years later, that committee helped UW- Oshkosh to be the lead campus to install Peoplesoft student management system. Jim eventually left UW-Oshkosh to pursue a new challenging career as Vice President of Wisconsin National Life Insurance Company located in Oshkosh. Jim also co-authored a book entitled "The Academic Intrapreneur" with his dear friends and colleagues Barry Perlman and Don Weber.

Following Shiela's death in 1990, Jim married Sharon L. Mielke on December 28, 1991, in Oshkosh. Together they built their retirement home in Shawano, where Jim and Sharon were active members of Peace United Church of Christ. Jim loved reading, playing cards, and always keeping up with current affairs. He also enjoyed gardening and winning many ribbons at the Shawano County fair from the beautiful flowers he grew in his yard. Jim cherished the time he spent with his family and ten grandchildren and looked forward to hunting with his grandsons every fall deer season.

Jim is survived by his son Jeff (Ellen) Gueths of Green Bay, WI; his daughters, Jennifer (Travis) Thede of Kaukauna, WI and Michelle (Scot) Harenburg of Oshkosh WI; his stepchildren, Greg (Pam) Jaenke of Neenah, WI and Stephanie (Mark) Ziebell, Appleton of WI; his grandchildren, Caleb Gueths, Beau (Rachel) Gueths, Hannah Thede, Lauren Thede, Rachel Thede, Romey Harenburg, Emily Jaenke, Allie Ziebell, and Austin Ziebell. He is further survived by his sisters, Karen (Tom) Grover and Linda Gueths-Pomeroy; his sister-in-law, Sharon Feese; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Everett and Minnie Gueths, his wife Shiela, his wife Sharon, and his grandson Logan James Gueths.

A Christian Service for Jim will take place on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at 11:00 am at Mickelson Funeral & Cremation Service in Shawano. Mr. Richard Menning will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am and continue until the time of service. In lieu of flowers and plants, the family will establish a memorial fund in the name of James. E. Gueths.

“We miss you dad and will see you again in heaven.”
