June L. Adekunle, age 81 of the Town of Wescott, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, January 23, 2022, at her home.

June was born March 25, 1940 in Oconto Falls, a daughter of the late Lionel and Joyce (Gallagher) Hodgins. After graduating from Appleton Memorial High School, she attended UW-Madison where she earned her undergraduate and Master’s Degree in Economics. She then moved to Washington DC where she worked for the United States Government as an economist.

June was united in marriage to Joseph Adekunle in Evanston, Illinois. The couple lived and worked in Washington DC and later moved to Nigeria for several years. Joseph preceded her in death in 1990. June retired in the mid 1990’s, and moved to Shawano in 1995 to assist in the care of her elderly parents. She was an avid writer and former member of the Shawano Writers Group. June was also very active in the disability rights movement and served as an advocate for several organizations.

June is survived by her son, Thomas Adekunle of Shawano, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Hodgins, and her sister, Lois Smith.

A public memorial service for June will be held this spring.
