Obituary for Louise W. Zahn

Louise W. Zahn, age 98 of Shawano, passed away Friday afternoon, April 28, 2023, in Shawano.

Louise was born February 28, 1925, in the Town of Summit, Langlade County, Wisconsin, a daughter of the late Frank and Lena (Steger) Simon. She was baptized on March 19, 1925 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in the Town of Summit. Louise attended Sunny Slope School in rural Langlade County through eighth grade. She then went to Antigo High School, graduating with the Class of 1943. Following high school, Louise attended the Langlade County Normal School, and then Central State Teacher’s College where she earned a Bachelor of Education degree. She was employed as a teacher in Langlade Public Schools for ten years (including a stint at Sunny Slope), and Peace Lutheran School in Antigo for seven years.

On January 24, 1961, Louise was united in marriage to Clyde Zahn at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Gleason, Wisconsin. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Shawano. Louise and Clyde shared a large garden for many years that allowed them to stay in touch with their farm roots. Vacations were mostly local to Wisconsin but a highlight for her and her family was a trip to Washington D.C. in 1975.

Clyde preceded her in death in February of 1997. She is a member of St. James Lutheran in Shawano where she was involved with the St. James Tabitha Society, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and the Stephen Ministry. Louise was also active with the Shawano Area Lutherans for Life, Shawano County Homemakers, and AARP. Louise was also an active member of the St. James Choir for many years. Reading, crossword puzzles, and jigsaw puzzles were some of her favorite hobbies.

Survivors include her two sons, David (Tammy) Zahn and Jay Zahn, both of Madison; five grandchildren, Kristina, Geoffrey, William, Madeline, and Annabelle Zahn; her sister-in-law, Mardell Simon; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 11:00 am at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. Pastor Andrew Zobel will officiate. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. Visitation will begin at the church at 9:30 am and continue until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers and plants, the family prefers memorials to the St. James Lutheran School Scholarship Fund or Shawano County Meals on Wheels.

“The family would like to thank the Cottages Assisted Living and Memory Care staff, as well as the Shawano Medical Center staff.”
