Obituary for Valentine U. Marciel Jr.

Valentine U. Marciel, Jr., age 82 of Clintonville, WI, formerly of Kahalu’u, Hawaii, passed away peacefully at his home early Thursday morning, July 29, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.

Valentine was born January 20, 1939 in Honolulu, Hawaii, son of the late Valentine, Sr. and Helen Marie (Muraki) Marciel. He attended school at Punahou School, Hawaii. Following graduation, he attended the University of Hawaii where he met and fell in love with his future wife, Diana Jean Understeller. He later entered the United States Coast Guard and served for two years. On August 26, 1961, Valentine and Diana were married in Honolulu. Valentine was employed at Hawaiian Electric Company as a lineman before being appointed a supervisor with his own crew. He retired from the company following 25 years of service.

Valentine was fascinated with trains. He loved to ride, photograph, research, and build them. His hobbies included building H.O. scale model trains and airplanes, camping, beach volleyball, body surfing, and snorkeling. Valentine was also an avid canoe paddler and swimmer. He sang with a barbershop quartet and was a member of the Punahou Glee Club. Valentine enjoyed watching football, and was a season ticket holder of the University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team.

Survivors include his loving wife, Diana, of Clintonville, formerly of Hawaii; his children, Deborah (Kevin) Naeyaert of Clintonville, Heidi (John) Vavul and Valentine “Val” (Charlotte) Marciel, III, both of Honolulu, HI; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his beloved black lab, Kaipo. He was preceded in death by his sister, Kuulei M. Flores; and two black labs, Kolohe and Hina.

Funeral services for Valentine will be held at a later date.
